Norton's busy training days......

Our friend Norton has had a busy couple of weeks!!! and his training continues to go well. A few weeks ago, he went with Linda (0ur chapter leader) to do a puppy swap and visit Cabela's. These puppy swaps are so important to our training program, it really helps the puppies move into new situations quickly and comfortably.

Norton had a fun time with Linda. He got to play with her golden Chloe, try a hand at "tenting"... made a ton of new friends,

and even dressed up as an Easter bunny!!!!!

When he got back home, I had the opportunity to take him down to Logan Airport. Our friend Kelli had gone to visit with family, and when Rick was heading down to pick her up.... I asked if I could go along. We went down early, just so we could work the dogs. We parked in the huge parking garage and headed to the elevators. Norton thinks everything is cool... and Otis, just waits quietly.

I see him sit like this often, I have to admit, I wondering what he's thinking..

The elevator dropped us off in the baggage area. Even though this picture doesn't show it, we arrived just as a plane was unloading. There were a lot of people pulling bags off, greeting one another.. other dogs that must have been on the flight... it was loud and noisy and Norton took it all in - as did Otis.

We wandered around, dealing with all sorts of people and different things. Which is exactly why we went there!!! But, when I found this huge cup of coffee!!! I couldn't resist... if only coffee really came in this size cup (sigh)

I have to say, this dog can have the calmest attitude about things. It's hard to think of him like "this" when I see him tearing around the yard and bouncing around the house... but overall, he takes things with a wonderful laid back calmness.

Kelli arrived safe and sound, and it was back to baggage to collect her things. Otis took a real interest this time, I think he might have been looking for Kelli's bag!!!!

The next day, we spent some time training at the Kittery Trading post (forgot my camera). The place was packed and it was hard to keep people at bay. Norton loves people, especially children, and some how when they see him the "rules" of a working dog don't apply. I gave up trying to tell people he was working!!!!

After that, we headed over to the flyball tournament that our club hosts each year. Now, there's a place that's loud and exciting. Norton was pretty excited to see all that activity... dogs racing, people yelling, balls rolling all over the place...

He watched with great interest....

but, after we had been there a few hours... this was Norton once again. Laying quietly and taking it all in. I have a good feeling about this dog too... he'll make it as a service dog, I am sure.

time to trade :(

A bittersweet day... I'm trading my truck for something newer. I feel sort of sad.. not only is this a paid for truck... but I like my truck and have a lot of memories attached to it.

Sadly, trucks - like many other things, just don't last forever and wear out. We are beginning to deal with rust issues and before we get to that stage of one major repair after another --it's time to say goodbye.

It's not like we don't have a truck for "farm use". I actually got my truck, because when we were boarding the horses, I needed it to transport all kinds of horse things. Also, when I got it, the girls were driving on their own, so I wasn't needed for the chauffeuring, and could go to this type of vehicle. However, my life has changed again... aside from not needing it for horse stuff, I find I am back to needing more room again... a place for Abbie.. places for more friends as we travel to NEADS together... places for more dogs (service dog, guests doggies and the like).. and my truck just doesn't offer that space.

So, here's the new baby. It's a one owner 2011 Jeep... with tow package (thank goodness because I have already needed it) installed. It gets better gas mileage than the truck, has a great back space for dogs, and can carry five people comfortably. I like it..... just not the payments!!! :(

Ginger!!!

As you all know, Ginger has a match. So, while waiting for her new owner to arrive and begin their training together, Ginger and several other NEADS dogs do outings of all kinds. One is called "Dog at your desk".. where volunteers take the NEADS dogs to work with them and practice office experiences. Ginger was chosen to "work" one day last week at the town offices in Princeton, MA. I wish I could figure out how to repost the article here on the blog, but basically, the volunteers talked about how much fun it is to have the dogs at work, and how excellent they have all been trained. This photo was on the front page.... our gal!!!! Goodness, the 25th is still two weeks away... it's taking forever to get here!!!!!

Happy Easter..

Spring on the farm this year has been warm -- actually hot on some days. We seldom have Easter with this warm weather, so everyone seems to be taking advantage of it. I had an errand to do one day at the post, and since Abbie and I were "working" in the barn....

We just hopped in the gator and ran over in that. Dan (my boss) thought that was the funniest thing ever, and got these photos of the two of us. Just wait til I drive over with my horse and buggy one day... wonder what he'll think of that!!!!

The hens are in full business again. We get six eggs a day.. they are so yummy!!! Everyone comments on "how different" they taste compared to store bought. In fact, one day while visiting Tee-tee (Kassy) Abbie wouldn't eat the eggs she made.. she said they were "yucky"... spoiled farm kid.

Rick popped over on the day that Ed was getting our lamp post up. He was happy to lend a helping hand.....

and I am so happy to have this beautiful light at the end of the walk way. Now I won't be so worried when friends come to visit in the dark!!!!

Easter dinner this year was at the farm. I just love having my family here and being able to cook a nice dinner for everyone. Naomi was so cute... she loves all the animals, and when Mom and Dad brought little Amy, Naomi appointed herself as Amy's watcher. She told her Dad just how it should all be done...

A wonderful time to enjoy each other's company and celebrate family and the gift that God sent to all of us... his Son and that we can spend our time in heaven.

Abbie had been with her Dad and his family over Easter, so we had our celebration a few days later. She was excited about her gifts, but teaching her the real celebration of Easter will be the greatest gift of all.

big news

News came from NEADS today.. Ginger has been matched and will be a dog of the ministry. We have a "meet and greet" date of April 25th, where we can meet with Ginger's new owner and see our girl once again. I am so excited and counting down the days already. Stay posted, needless to say a blog will be in the works..

call me AMY!!!

Before a human dies, they write their last will and testament, give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I'd ask......

To a poor and lonely stray, I'd give my happy home. My bowl and cozy bed, soft pillows and all my toys. The lap, which I loved so much, the tender, loving touch. The hand that stroked my fur and sweet voices which called my name. I'd will to the sad, scared shelter dog, the place I had in my human's loving heart of which there seemed to be no bound.

So, when I die, please do not say " I will never have another pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand". Instead, go find an unloved dog. One who's life has held no joy or hope, and give MY place to "her". This is the only thing that I can give... the Love that I left behind.
This is my inheritance... my will and last my testament.....

And so it was... today, Good Friday.. that my Mom and Dad honored their little Adam, and found a dog who needed them. A sweet little girl, arriving from the south, into a warm and loving New England home.

Her name is Amy... keeping the "A" theme going in a long line of good dogs... "Annie" & "Adam". She is about a year old and though she has a big spot to fill....

I have a very good feeling, she is going to do her very best. Welcome Home little Amy, all you have to do is return the love.

onto those spring projects...

Today started out with big going ons, here on the farm. Abbie was pretty excited when she watched out the front door, and saw....














This big truck parked on the front lawn. Our steps have arrived, and now we will be able to use the front the door!!! One good thing about an early spring with no snow... solid ground to do projects like this.









The steps are made of cement, but have a "granite" look about them. What surprised me was they were installed by just one person.










And it only took him the morning to do it. Before long, Abbie was giving them a test run.













It looks so much better not having that drop off space just below the door. And I tend to keep the front door open now and let all that good light into the house.











And Mona has a new place to sun herself.












Along with the step project came the walk way light. We got a matching "granite" light post with the steps. I have had the light itself for months (it matches the light by the front door)... but now we can get it in place.

and I can't wait to see it lit at night. Our next big projects will be the walkway, and the deck out back, both are on the summer schedule. It's looking good around the farm.

Happy Birthday to the Moms!!!!

Before I get into the story of the "Mom's birthdays".. I just had to share a couple of photos of Abbie at play. "Papa" (aka my Ed) made this cute little table for Abbie's barn and animals. She was so excited to have something that "fits her" like this. Though she did inform him that she needs a stool to sit on. Guess for now, she can manage with her ball, but a stool would be much better!!!





And I love this photo of "Beepa" (my Dad) and Abbie together. They are playing the marble game. This toy is at least 25 years old. My parents picked it up on a visit to the Amish country. It's a series of tracks that you let marbles roll along, until they end at the bottom in a little cup. My girls and many of their friends - along with all the other grandbabies - spent hours with this simple toy. Nice to see it's onto another generation.....






So, Kas and Nate hosted the Mom's birthday party this year. Kas had her little house all decked out for spring and this special occasion. Deb and I have a grand time celebrating our birthdays.. which are just one day apart.. mine the 30 and her's the 1st. I love these little owls that Kas made...








Norton came along to join the fun... though much of it was spent practicing his down stays!!!!











It turned out to be quite the party with both sides of the families all coming together. I've said this many times before, but any house that is filled with family and friends is the BEST...

The next day, it was time for a drive. So, I pulled out Duke,










Hitched to the fore cart and off we went. The last time we had him out was for the sleigh ride, and I really want to hitch him more often. We had a good time driving out threw the fields, and a bit on the road.



I have also made reservations for the fall....(not wishing summer away).. but we are going to take Duke and spend four days of driving in Arcadia National Park. That is going to be fun!!!!!!!

the "quing ket".... (to quote Abbie)

For the past year, I have been eyeing these swing set that are so popular right now. I just thought it would be great fun to have one, for Abbie, and any other grandbabies that come along. They have some really neat designs and really neat "things" to do.. at a REALLY NEAT price!!! oi....but, I thought if I put a few pennies away each month, I could eventually come up with on. Last week, we were out and about and came across a place were they had these sets, so we stopped in. Turns out, if I was willing to buy a "last year's display model" (which has been "out" in the weather) I could get one for a much reduced price.... needless to say, I jumped at the deal.

They also said, if we were willing to pick it up and then put it together ourselves.... we could have a little more discount...

OK... we're game. We have trailers, Ed is very "handy" and how hard could that be. As we pulled the pieces off the trailer with Ed telling me "it's really not that heavy"... I'm beginning to think, I should have paid to have it delivered and set up!!!!!










Thank goodness we have a tractor!!! and I guess, it really wasn't that hard to do --- with the tractor of course. It took us a couple of hours...











and some interesting ways of reaching things to tighten and put together.... (tower is certainly strong enough for kids!!!!!)













but, we managed it.












And now have this grand place for kids to play.












Abbie wasn't home when we set it up, but the next morning (while dressed for church) she just had to run out and check it over!!! Her "Quing ket"... as she calls it....
